          Introduction

With almost 90 years of producing quality power tools under their belts, Delta has become one of the biggest names in the woodworking power tool industry.  Their scroll saw, the 40-694, is a prime example of how and why they have earned that distinction.  Designed to help the serious craftsmen make masterpieces with their work while simplifying the process, this scroll saw could very easily be the best scroll saw currently on the market.

          Best Features

One of the best features is the finish on this saw.  It is very durable and expertly done.  Another great feature is the tool-free blade change.  It will literally only take seconds to change the blade on this saw and there is a built-in blade storage located on the top of the saw.  It makes blade changes even easier by having them on hand and close by.   The 20-inch throat is another feature that stands out.  The extra length means that users will have ample space to work with larger material.

          Advantages

There are many advantages to this high end scroll saw.  For starters, it can handle a wide range of cutting tasks with the electronic variable speed control that adjusts from as low as 400 SPM all the way up to 1,750 SPM.  The equipped dual parallel link arm reduces not only vibration while the saw is operating, but also reduces over and under cutting to improve accuracy.

The upper arm is able to lock when in the up position when lifted while changing blades or while adjusting the blade position when doing fret work.  Its hefty 70 pound weight enables it to stay put during use as well as further help with reducing vibration which aids with accuracy.

          Disadvantages

No scroll saw is perfect and that also applies to the 40-694.  One of the few reported is with the incorporated saw dust blower.  The blower isn’t as strong as you would think on a saw of this caliber.  There is one other downfall to this saw that has been reported by many users and that is excessive vibration.  Despite the extra weight of the saw and the dual parallel link arm, quite a few people have reported a lot of vibration with the 40-694 while in operation.

          Best Suited For

The Delta 40-694 20-Inch Variable Speed Scroll Saw is a truly great saw in spite of the reported issues.  It is expertly designed and packed with features you would expect to find on larger more expensive models.  It is designed with precision in mind while remaining very user friendly.

The 40-694 has enough power chew through the toughest woods and materials you can throw at it without skipping beat and enough control to handle delicate cuts.  This saw is perfectly suited for the experienced professional and the rookie just starting to get their feet wet with scrolling.  The durability makes it great for taking from jobsite to jobsite, and the design and ease of use makes it ideal for less experienced users. Another similar model would be the Dw788 model if this one does not fit your needs.
