Makita BJR182Z Reciprocating Saw Review

Makita continues to build on their positive reputation with their BJR182Z 18-Volt LXT Cordless Reciprocating Saw.  Designed for easy mobility and still providing reliable performance, the BJR182Z’s D35 high-torque motor provides plenty of muscle for tough cutting applications.  It is easy to see how Makita was one of the pioneers to the cordless power tool market with this saw.

Best Features

Powered by the Makita build D35 motor, offers plenty of torque.  While it may be slightly slower than other comparable cordless reciprocating saws, the additional torque helps to prevent blade binding and damage.

Another feature of the BJR182Z is the versatility it offers.  The goal in the design of this saw was  to provide the professional that needs quality saw that is mobile and handle any type of cutting needed.  With the tool-less blade changing clamp and adjustable shoe for depth control, Makita accomplished that goal

Advantages

Advantages of the BJR182Z include the variable speed motor that delivers up to 2,900 SPM and a stroke length of 1-1/8 inch to ensure fast cutting.  Another advantage is the compact 17-3/4 inch design to help users get into tight areas.

An additional advantage is the batteries.  The 18-Volt LXT Lithium-Ion batteries can fully charge in 30 minutes and if you swap them out for the professional grade Ni-Cad batteries, they can last over 2X longer than the competitor’s batteries.

Disadvantages

One drawback of the BJR182Z is that it weights more than many of the comparable models on the market and nearly 10lbs with battery.  If you’re looking for a super-lite reciprocating saw, checkout the Milwaukee 2625-20, not this one.

Another disadvantage is the fact that this is a bare-tool item.  A bare-tool item means that all you get when you purchase it is the saw itself, no blade, battery, charger, or tote.  Granted, most people understand what bare tool means. There are those that have never purchased a bare-tool item before however, and are surprised to find out that they have to purchase more items before they can even use their new saw.

Conclusion

Overall, the Makita BJR182Z is a well-constructed saw that should provide for many hours of use.  With good torque, long-lasting batteries, bought separately, it would make for a fine addition to the professionals inventory.

For the beginner or first-time user, it is a good saw to learn on and develop your skills with.  It offers plenty of power and makes cutting tasks fast and simple.  The quick charging batteries means you will not be out of the fight very long when they die and helps you to ensure you get the job done.
